Peter,
I understand you're involved in a thread on the Firewalls list where
NTBugtraq's been brought up. Unfortunately, the Majordomo doesn't seem
to want to respond to my subscription confirmation, and I believe I
cannot post directly without being subscribed (if you know, tell me if
I'm wrong).
Anyway, what I understand is this;
You said something like NTBugtraq doesn't allow criticism of NT. You
also said something like you thought it was fine for me to run the list
the way I want, but that NTBugtraq wasn't a good measuring stick for
NT's reliability.
For your own information, in case I never get onto the list, let me say;
1. You're right, I don't allow much criticism of NT. The list's not
intended for that purpose. For the most part, the list is intended to
alert folks to issues and provide them with workarounds and fixes that
involve using NT. Folks get criticized enough other places for using NT,
NTBugtraq was intended to be a place that left that aspect out of the
discussion (i.e. "drop NT, use unix instead"...)
2. You and I have had our differences of opinions, but I still respect
your opinion and your right to voice it, regardless of whether or not I
think its appropriate for NTBugtraq.
3. I appreciate you saying I'm doing a fine job.
4. NTBugtraq **shouldn't** be a measuring stick for NT's reliability, it
was never intended to be such a thing. We're not about testimonials, and
like any product, no doubt we could find folks that would stand on both
sides of the fence regarding how well NT fares. Comparing the number of
exploits in OS' is just plain stupid. There's exploits in all OS', and
that's got little to do with the OS' reliability, IMO. If you want to
keep your NT environment as secure as possible, NTBugtraq is just one of
many lists that should be monitored, no more, no less.
Feel free to publish any of this, or if I can post without being
subscribed, let me know and I'll post.
For those folks whom you say are contacting you with not-so-nice things
to say about me, do me a favor, tell them to tell me! I so rarely get a
flame that I'm desperate for them. How anyone thinks I'm supposed to
know truly how well or not I'm doing if they don't tell me what pisses
them off is beyond me. All I get are praise messages, and in all
humility, I get them quite a lot. I'd love to hear from someone who has
an honest gripe about how I do things (not trying to open old wounds
with you, btw...;-])
A friend of mine, Vin McLellan, has forwarded a number of the posts in
this "Why not NT?" thread for me to look over and maybe put some kind of
response to. I was planning on doing that when someone else forwarded me
a couple of messages from you. Hence this reply. As I said, I'm trying
to get subscribed again but it doesn't seem to be working too well.
Hope all is well with you.
Cheers,
Russ - NTBugtraq Editor
