Your problem got me thinking, if you want a way to figure out your
dynamically-assigned IP address without having to scan networks after a
power-cycle, try using the Windows scheduler to issue a regularly timed
batch file which invokes netcat to issue SMTP commands to get your IP
address, for example, getip.bat:
nc mail.epix.net 25 < infile > outfile.html (or whatever your mail server
is)
ftp ftp.geocities.com -s:ftpcommands (or whatever the servername is)
where infile is:
HELO domain.com
QUIT
and ftpcommands is:
YourUserid
YourPassword
cd /www
put outfile.html
bye
If your mail server is using a vanilla Sendmail (not sure which versions)
the HELO command should return your IP address (of the Firewall's external
interface) and you just upload the output outfile.html to your free
Geocities/Tripod/Whatever account. Then you can always go that web page to
find out where your power-cycled WebRamp is currently residing. Voila! No
more scanning 4 class Cs! BTW, do you really do that, or was this just a
hypothetical question?
Oh yeah, you can get netcat for 95/98/NT at www.l0pht.com.
