Exactly,

You cannot connect DTE to DTE with a straight through cable you need to either use a 
crossover cable or a switch/hub on the segment.

sounds like you wanna use a vlan on the switch or you could use a
crossover cable.  you won't be able to plug a server directly into the
card using a standard cable.
