Rich,
#Why do they keep doing this ?? What do firewall companies really
#hope to gain??? I have watched these "contests" for years
#now and still don't understand why they keep doing it. It
#seems, most of them will get nothing but script kiddie attacks
#and nothing more. Dare I ask, comments???
This was probably a retorical question but I'll answer it antway.
ADVERTIZING, this is purely a sales play. It also convinces non-technical
people that the product is good. I don't know a lot about soccer so if a
soccer coach told me his team won 10 games and another team won 8 games and
lost 2 games then I'll probably think that his team is better. Of course,
he failed to tell me that his team was a proffesional soccer team playing
against a bunch of kids. It is not what me and you want to buy that
matters it's what the CEO wants to buy that matters. Another way to look
at it is this way. Let's say I work for a publicly traded company. There
is a firewall that is advertized as being the best and there is a firewall
that is the best. If we buy the firewall that our shareholders think is
the best (because of advertizing) and it generates warm fuzzy feelings that
cause them to buy more stock which causes our stock price to go up then is
that better than buying the firewall that is the best? I bet the CEO would
want the warm fuzzy rising stock prices.

Jeffery Gieser
