I'd have to agree with most of the suggestions already posted so far! 

The only thing I have to add, possibly for the benefit of the original
sender....okay, assuming the original sender of this list topic likes pretty
GUI stuff (windows)...then you might want to take a look at Iris 2.0 from
www.eeye.com . Download version for 15 days. It's "nice." You might see
Retina 3 there also which is a nice scanner.

I prefer snort (www.snort.org) for sniffing. Yes it is an IDS but it also
supports the full BPF syntax that tcpdump has. So it makes a great sniffer
(which is what it started as initially).
