I'm not sure, but I think that at one time Cisco was giving away PIXen like other companies give away logo'd pens- presumably to make the #1 or #2 in the market requirement. Customers taking^W buying a PIX were offered fantastic discounts on other gear, so having a PIX in a box wasn't as good as getting one of those cool leather jackets[1], but better than the green t-shirts...
