For a long time I steered clear of xBSD in favor of Linux ... Call it a bad habit or an initial experience loading FreeBSD on a machine years ago. Several months ago, I needed to install a small and light firewall with VPN capability. Reluctantly, I went to OpenBSD 3.0. What a shock!
My target machine was a Pentium 200MHz machine with 128Mb of memory. It installed in minutes. I was able to set up IPF/NAT within minutes. I struggled for an hour with the VPN, but then discovered the problem was a wayward router access-list. Once solved, the VPN was up within minutes. On a whim, I replaced my home DSL router with an OpenBSD box -- "just for testing," I told my wife. I was even able to -- with the default install -- negotiate PPPoE. It worked so well, I was now reluctant to go back to the DSL router! But, I didn't have time to sort through the SAMBA issues before the network printer was required, so I went back. Now, OpenBSD is not going to replace all my firewalls and VPN devices. But it could. And I believe a sysop familiar with Linux shouldn't have much trouble becoming accustomed to OpenBSD. Good luck!
