i simply upgrade the debian package. that should replace all files.
and i can start fish. it just takes a while until the prompt is there.

i run dpkg -i fish_1.21.12-0darcs2_i386.deb
then kill all the running instances of fish and fishd
the killing was not necesary however...

i get 16 or 17 copies, and then the backtrace output that i pasted earlier.
and after that a usable prompt.
