if i edit a previously run command somewhere in the middle, then
up-arrow turns everything before the cursor into a search string, and
throws away the rest. no way to get it back that i have found.

alt-enter does some wierd xterm magic, very confusing.
none -f the alt-keys work for me :-(

could the backslash be made invisible once the line is added?
