I don't want to malign beagles - but that is my experience. Very food and smell oriented. I agree about the fenced yard. There are miniature beagles - some of which - I've been told - think about people as much as food and smells. They may also have an oilier (and smellier) coat that your border collie. I once had the pleasure of waiting around in a dog run for a basset HOUND to "produce" a diamond ring he had swallowed from off the bedside table. He thought it was a treat. That is the hound attitude about food for you. And they will put their nose down and follow it .. wherever the smells take them.
