It seems yellow duns are a real 'shot in the dark', but there is still a basic genetic matching that has to occur to get it. Maybe the genes come from so far back in the generations that they are hard to trace.
Here is a link to his record on the NFHR Pedigree search. You can do the looking there by clicking on his sire or dam and looking back to see what colors the ancestors are. I don't always have colors on the horses in the pedigrees that are not actually registered with the NFHR though so if it goes back to far you probably won't find it.
