My old Nansy mare was a little bit that way---it was nearly 6 months
after I got her (at age 17) before she warmed up to me.  Oh, she was
polite enough, and reasonably obedient, just not particularly friendly.

I was only her second owner, but she had been shuttled back and forth
to breeders, taken on trail rides, leased out as a pack horse, used in
"petting zoo" (expo) situations, etc.  My theory was that she'd been
moved around so much that she had learned not to "invest" much in
relationships, until she was sure that they'd last.

Anyway, glad to hear that your guy has come around!
