My two cents on this: when my mare (not a fjord) became seriously
ill.... she was at the big vet center in the area.... they had done
what they could with her medically and financially for us within our
budget (she was an older mare also) ..... we discussed putting her
down..... well...... the solution to that was she would go to one of
those places where she would be 'melted down'.... what are they
called?? anyhow the point of this was she would be 'carted/hauled'
off to this place ALIVE (even though seriously ill and maybe would
have died on the trip over) and then killed/slaughter there. I was
so offended that they (vets) would even consider telling me this (I
was also like 5 mths pregnant!!) anyhow I told them no way would I do
that to her. She would be euthanized right there at the vets THEN
they could come and take her away. I didn't care if the cost was
more, I wouldn't do this to her. She deserved better!!!
End of story was she improved enough that we took her home only to
have an immediate setback and she passed away but at least she was
surrounded by all of her horsey friends. She is buried at my friends
place.

As for the answer to what to do with a humainly euthanized horse,
for crying
out loud I am shocked that you asked that question! Why is it that
when a
horse is convienant to you (i.e. young, healthy, winning ribbons for
you, of
service, etc) you are able to find ways to solve all the potential
burdens
that horse causes you like cost of feed, where to board it, fixing
fences,
vet bills if injury or illness occurs, but once that animal needs to
die,
you find it so darn INCONVIENANT to have to figure out a way to help
that
horse die in dignity and without betraying the bond that horse had
with you?
If you could afford
to have a horse in the first place, you can afford to dispose of
it's body
after it's gone.
