Woohoo, this is actually a question I can answer on flex coders :). Connecting to SQL Server 2005 works really well in flex. You will have to build a webservice in vb.net or C#.net to do this. Fortunetly there are VERY VERY good tutorials on how to do this. As far as exposing it to the outside world you can write ur webservices so that people have to have a certain username or password to connect to it. I think you can also do things so that only local apps (like ur flex application) can access ur webservice and not outside apps. I haven't looked into doing this though.
First off, http://www.asp.net/learn/videos is ur friend. I recommend taking the time and watching the series "SQL Server 2005 Express for Beginners" Second you are going to need an IDE to make the webservice. Luckily Microsoft offers a free one at http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd called visual web developer express. Download that and install it. Third, Lynda.com has an excellent video series on advanced Flex development. In chapter 11 of the video it tells you EXACTALLY how to make a .NET webservice and how to get the data into flex. The guy shows you two ways, one really simple way but slower way. And one slightly more complex but very very fast way. This video cost 99 bucks though! You have to put in some time and a little bit of money to watch all those videos though! Ill be checking this string regularly if you need any more help.
