You are looking for an architecture :) One of the most popular for Flex is Cairngorm, check it out here: http://labs.adobe.com/wiki/index.php/Cairngorm But yes, you should definily break things out into their own components, the smaller the better, it will help you manage code, more easily add features and locate bugs.
