I appreciate the problem Flex had when it would give approximate delivery dates and then had to deal with unhappy customers who held to those dates. That led to the current policy of not talking about or promising anything, one that appears to me to carry a number of drawbacks as well. If it were up to me I would adopt an intermediate policy of periodically outlining which features/bugs were being worked on for the next release along with an estimated percentage of completion, including letting user's know when it has gone to closed-beta (what I would call alpha testing). That would not tie the development to a delivery date but would give users visibility into the progress along with a reasonable expectation of which new features (if any) would be in the next release. I can understand Flex not wanting to give its competitors visibility into its progress in various areas but that needs to be balanced against customer expectations and satisfaction.
