Hi Gerald 

I use the USB to parallel adapter cable and today off and on I have been
pulling the cable and connecting my camera stick card reader to upload
pictures from my grandson's work of art.....maybe that is related to the
problem??

This usually means that the parallel port connector is not seated
properly
on one end or the other.
