Thanks, Steve...when I bought this Celeron-based computer about five years ago, I did not envision running a real-time application such as PowerSDR on it. A processor upgrade probably should be my next step if I cannot achieve decent performance from fine-tuning the buffers and process priority...certainly less costly than a new machine, especially since this is a backup that will probably be used infrequently.

Check the Dell model structure to determine the best processor it used, http://www.dell.com/us/en/dfh/desktops/optix_gx520/pd.aspx?refid=optix_g x520&cs=22&s=dfh, and try to obtain one. This document details how to install one. http://support.dell.com/support/edocs/systems/opgx520/en/ug/mtprcsr0.htm #wp1142442 Regards Steve -----Original Message----- From: flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz [mailto:flexradio-boun...@flex-radio.biz] On Behalf Of Dudley Hurry Sent: 17 June 2010 23:22 To: Ed Wilson Cc: flexra...@yahoogroups.com; flexradio@flex-radio.biz Subject: Re: [Flexradio] Internal Keyer Clock Ed, It may well be the the Celerons processor giving the timing error. Most times, unless you have finely tuned the OS, in this case XP, to a very efficient point, just running all the necessary programs and then a Real-time device and SW as the Flex and PowerSDR, 50% range is hard to maintain smooth timing for CW. You will need to adjust your buffers and sample rate along with the Process Priority in the Options menu to help with all the transitions from RX to TX and back smoothly. The problem with the Celerons is that the L2 cache and the memory buss speeds are lower than even the normal processors and L2 is important. Try the Process Priority at Real Time to see if this does not help, buffer at 2048 and 48 K for sample rate. Make sure your FW driver is set the same for buffer as the Audio tab is set. 73, Dudley WA5QPZ Ed Wilson wrote: > Colleagues, > > As I mentioned in a post about a week or so ago, I recently acquired a Flex-5000 after using a Flex-3000 for about a half-year. I operate mostly CW and PSK and the first thing that I noticed was that I had to set the CW speed to about 24 WPM to obtain a speed equivalent to 18 WPM in the previous setup. I also noticed some unevenness in the speed at which characters were sent. This unevenness causes me to make some sending errors (more than usual) as I get an unexpected dot or dash sometimes. > > Tim Ellison suggested that perhaps the Celeron processor just does not have the "horsepower" for PowerSDR (I am using 1.18.6 for now). This will not be my primary radio, but I do want a reliable backup, at least for now. > > My first question is, what is the source of the clock for the internal keyer? I am trying to figure-out why it would be running slower with the Celeron-based computer. By the way, I am running Windows XP SP3 and CPU utilization seems to run around 50% with no other programs running. CPU utilization was less than 30% with the Vostro. > > My second questions is whether there is any "tune-up" software for Windows XP that does not cost an arm and a leg that would allow me to determine is I have some background processes running that are slowing this computer down. > > Thanks in advance for any advice. > > Ed, K0KC > > > > > _______________________________________________ > FlexRadio Systems Mailing List > FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz > http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz > Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ > Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: > http://www.flex-radio.com/ > > _______________________________________________ FlexRadio Systems Mailing List FlexRadio@flex-radio.biz http://mail.flex-radio.biz/mailman/listinfo/flexradio_flex-radio.biz Archives: http://www.mail-archive.com/flexradio%40flex-radio.biz/ Knowledge Base: http://kc.flex-radio.com/ Homepage: http://www.flex-radio.com/ __________________________________________________________ This email has been scanned for viruses by www.epagency.net If you consider this email spam, please forward it to s...@epagency.net __________________________________________________________ __._,_.___ Reply to sender | Reply to group | Reply via web post | Start a New Topic Messages in this topic (3) Recent Activity: * New Members 8 Visit Your Group -------- This informal group is not officially associated with FlexRadio Systems.
