My experiences are similar to Hank's. I'd highly recommend the minimum
configuration specify a multi-core processor.
I originally ran PowerSDR and my Flex 1500 on a 2 GHz Pentium 4 with
1.25 GB of RAM. As it was the DPC checker showed it should have worked
well but CW worked poorly at best but usually unacceptably. (PowerSDR
2.0.5 and 2.0.6) When I would click and drag the spectrum display to
tune the audio would quit while I was dragging.
I'm now running it on 1.8GHz dual-core laptop and I do not see any of
the above poor behavior and on top of that I can have FLDIGI and a
cluster running and the PSDR CPU usage usually hovers around 20-35%.
Note that this doesn't necessarily imply an expensive computer. The
dual-core Dell Latitude I'm using was an off-lease refurb with XP Pro
and 2GB of RAM for around $300.

I read through that all. Excellent and with some programs to download
to check your PC.
One thing that is very difficult to find on the Flex pages is:
"what kind of PC will I need to operate a FlexRadio Systems SDR?"
Looking strictly at using the Flex-1500, the present day Netbooks won't
do it. (I kinda already figured that out!). And your basic 2 GHz Pentium
4 won't do it - it's well under 400 us, but it will not transmit quality
CW any better (or worse) than the Netbook.
It appears that you need a Dual Core or a Core 2Duo ..... but that is
never addressed on the Flex pages.
So .... at Orlando the folks at the booth told me that a good ole Aspire
One netbook would work with a 1500 on CW & SSB, but probably not on the
digital modes. That does not appear to be the case, and would have saved
me quite a bit of time .....
