You can go a lot further than that. Try replacing picDisplay.png with your favorite picture.
Needs to be in the *.png format though.

Two skins are close to the Default and have buttons that change color
on activation (including the RIT and XIT buttons). They are IK3VIG
Black and ik3vig cyan. The cyan is my current favorite. BTW, the
panadapter display color can be changed by replacing one's
picDisplay.png with a preferred one from another skin.

In my case I first made a copy of IK3VIG Black (named it NEW IK3VIG
Black) and replaced its picDisplay.png with the one from IK3VIG
silver-green. Its a nice solid green that matches that skins button
activated color.

Try the new hi-res skin that was included in RC1. It isn't "pretty", but you can't miss the control state.

If someone does a "mod" for this skin let me know. My preference is the default skin but I would much rather have the button fully illuminated as opposed to just the small blue line because a fully illuminated button is more quickly recognized.

"How do you change the button color?"

You can't using the option you mentioned below for controls on the console unless you change the graphic files associated with that control (there are two; the on state & off state) for that skin.

Setup/Appearance only controls dialog boxes that are not "skinned".

Upon doing a search for answer before dropping a question here, see that there had a long running discussion on skins and buttons, so I hope this does not stir the pot and cause a boil over....

How do you change the button color? I see via Setup/Appearance there seems to be a facility to change the color. When I try nothing happens...even if I use a different skin.

All I want to do is change the little blue line or button marker to fully illuminate the button on the Default skin.

During my search there was comment where some one said it is easy to do , but never stated how.
