I don't even use the power button. The few times I've turned it
off, eg. if I go away for a weekend, has been by killing the power

That works for the 3000 and 1500. That does not work for the 5000.
Unfortunately, I do not (yet) have a 5000, but thanks for the tip.
The main reason I have it accessible is for the microphone jack. I
have a single MH-31 that I share between the F3K, my F1500 and my
FT817. If someone knows of a source I would like to get a couple more.
Or bring a connection to an external mic mixer and then send mic audio
back to the radios on the FlexWire port. Now you don't need to move
your mic around.

I know that, but both my F1500 and FT817 are used for portable
applications, driving microwave transverters. A shack mixer isn't going
to be of much use. I once drove several hours to get to the top of a
mountain for a 10G contest, and realized my mic was still on the F3K.
While I had fun, there are a lot of the microwave crowd that are not
comfortable with code.
