Nah, it's just shorter than typing "DESIGN PATTERNS: ELEMENTS OF REUSABLE OBJECT-ORIENTED SOFTWARE" or "the Gamma/Helm/Johnson/Vlissades book" all the time. For C++ programmers, the GoF book is as familiar as K&R book is/was for C programmers -- I wouldn't expect anyone to be dazzled by the abbreviation.
