Actually that square is the sun's halo. Things look this way if fg can't load the texture-files. I'd check out the permissions and ownership of the files and directories in FGROOT.
Also, could you provide FlightGear's output? If it's a problem with loading the textures there should be a message. Besides, is this the default fg of Kubuntu?
