Maybe not. But if you google a bit you fill find other applications 
using OpenAL, which calculate the Doppler effect (at least at windows) 
for themself. This confirms my suspicion, that it is a bug in OpenAL. 
But due to known problems in OpenAL1.0 this could be a relict of older 
time. To read the OpenAL bugtracker you need a login.

First I need the feedback, who else has this bug. Then I will report it 
to OpenAL.
You can switch of this patch, which isn't a hack, by a simple #define
Probably there is  another bug in the Doppler code of OpenAL (strange 
sounds near the speed of sound), this should be fixed by this patch, too.
But I won't wait for the bug fixed in OpenAL, if the way to get 
realistic Doppler effect is as simple as it is.
