The problem seems to be a default joystick which always takes control.
That is true with yours and the modified extreme-3d-pro.xml one I made.
Alway with no exception the upper stick highest left side button (#5)
is always the mixture RED knob on a C172 (default). I have even tried
editing /usr/lib/Flightgear/Joystick.xml - No Luck.
