I'd just like to mention I've also been discouraged by the ifdef
thicket in the OS specific files.  But Manolo was always so fast at
fixing any problems that came up that I had the luxury of laziness :)

I can understand how it arose, that sort of thing happens naturally
once it gets started with "just a few".  But it sure would be nice to
clean it all up.
