Hello Deb,

Please do not feel bad. Many times it is very difficult to explain database "things" without actually physically showing what you mean.

If I understand you, you want to display all the Artists in a portal. If the Artists appear only once in the related table is is fairly easy. Create a calculation data field type text called "All" equal to "All" in the current and related tables. Create a relationship for All::All. Make the portal based on that relationship and use the Artists data field.

Now if you want to select an Artist, go through and add a unique data field for each artist as a key field. Now you can select that field and paste it in the current file and use it as a lookup to put the selected Artist in the current file.

There are various ways you can work this, but that may give you some ideas.

The data already exists in the Artists File (the portal data), but it has to
be chosen from the dropdown list to appear in the image file. I don't know
if I'm making myself clear here. Sorry, I'm not sure exactly how to give you
the picture of my situation.

In the old 5.5 solution, the Artist Field was a related field. As I entered
records, I chose the artist's name from a drop down list.

When I upgraded to 8.3 (now 8.5) I decided to make that field a portal field
- for a lot of reasons. It's essentially a new field in the Image Table
layout - so, the portal field is empty. H

How do I get the artist's names from my old Artist Field, native to the
Image Table, to appear in the new portal field for Artist's names without
going through the records one by one and rechoosing the artist's name from
the dropdown list (names from the Artist's table)?

I know that's a convoluted explanation which may explain why I'm having the
difficulty.
