Hi Deborah,

I think I know what you're trying to do...

1. Sort the Image table by ArtistName
2. Choose File -> Export and only export the ArtistName field, and check the box to summarize by ArtistName (this gives you only one occurrence of each artist). 3. Make a new table, Artists, with ArtistID (auto-enter serial number to be used as the primary key) and ArtistName.
4. Import the data from step 2 into the new Artists table.
5. Add a field to the Image table called ArtistID or fk_ArtistID for Foreign Key. 6. Add a relationship to the graph which matches ArtistID to ArtistID. Let's call it Image_Artist_ArtistID. 7. Add a relationship to the graph which matches ArtistName to ArtistName. (This is a temporary relationship which you will delete later.) Let's call it Image_Artist_ArtistName 8. In the Image table, use the Replace command to replace the contents of ArtistID with a calculated result equal to Image_Artist_ArtistName::ArtistID. 9. Change all layouts in the Image table where the ArtistName field appears to Image_Artist_ArtistID::ArtistName, then you can remove the ArtistName field from the Image table.
10. Remove the relationship created in step 7.
11. Make a value list, ArtistID_and_Name based on the fields in the Artist table. 12. Format the ArtistID field in the Image table to display that value list.

So I just re-read your posts and now I'm not sure that I really do understand what you're after. But I'm posting this anyway in hopes that it may be of some help.

I'm not making my situation clear I see. I was afraid of that.

The data already exists in the Artists File (the portal data), but it has to be chosen from the dropdown list to appear in the image file. I don't know if I'm making myself clear here. Sorry, I'm not sure exactly how to give you
the picture of my situation.

In the old 5.5 solution, the Artist Field was a related field. As I entered
records, I chose the artist's name from a drop down list.

When I upgraded to 8.3 (now 8.5) I decided to make that field a portal field - for a lot of reasons. It's essentially a new field in the Image Table
layout - so, the portal field is empty. H

How do I get the artist's names from my old Artist Field, native to the Image Table, to appear in the new portal field for Artist's names without going through the records one by one and rechoosing the artist's name from
the dropdown list (names from the Artist's table)?

I know that's a convoluted explanation which may explain why I'm having the
difficulty.

A portal shows related data either in the same table/file or a

Is there anyway to import into a portal field?

I have an image record (part of an old 5.5 solution upgraded to 8.5) and
decided to change the Artist name to a portal field (so I could have
multiple artists in one field). I have about 2000 records where I have the
artists name in the old artist field, but the portal field is blank.

I've been making the changes record by record but it would be so much easier if there was some way I could just import the artist field into the portal
field. Is there any way to do that?
