I did the exact same thing when I first tried to make a portal for new data
entry. I even had a model file, but still could not figure out what I was
doing wrong for the longest time.
It was such a simple thing once I learned to check the right box in the
relationship graph. One of those Homer Simpson "Doh!" moments.
