default field size - set / reset?

hi, is there a way to set / reset the default 
sizes of objects, like fields?  i can set almost 
all other parameters (font, background colour, 
etc.) but haven't found a way to do this.   also 
when cleaning up older (or sloppy!) layouts i get 
extremely bored having to type the specific 
values to adjust all fields on the layout and 
would like to select a group of fields and reset 
to a default value, or at least be able to define 
an identical sizùe for a number of selected 
fields.
