Ross,
I've gone back and checked the original FM6 file which I had to convert
to FM8.5 so i could import the data, unfortunately the converted file
does not allow the same self relationship to work either. So it appears
to be a 8.5 thing.
Its a very simple thing to do so thats why I can't understand what's
happening. I've gone back to another fm6 file and re created the same
thing and it works easy but it won't work in 8.5.

Lee,
That's why I suggested viewing all of the fields of the two records
side by side, in two separate windows. It's a start to finding the
something that is obviously not right.
The fact that you can't enter data into the empty self related fields
suggests that the "Allow field to be entered in Browse mode" is not
checked in the Field Behavior dialog box in Layout mode.
Have you created any other relationships in this file, and if so, are
they working as expected?

Ross,
The fields are accepted, by that I mean they don't show the 'Index
missing' sign but nothing appears in them. I'm obviously missing
something, it may be in the way the records are constructed. I'm just
not sure. The later record should show what was in the earlier record
but something isn't right, obviously.

Lee,
I think what you're trying to do is a good way of meeting your data
entry goals.
When you say the related fields just do not work, what do you mean?
Are they just empty, or do they not exist? Can you enter some data
in them, and see where it ends up in the related record?
Perhaps you could create a second window showing all the fields in
your January record, which you can compare with the same layout for
the August record. Then you can be sure that the calculated field
used in the relationship is identical in both records.
