Thank you for your help. I'm not sure but it could very well have been
that. As always I learn something every time I ask a question. Quite
often a reply highlights unknown advances for me for reasons that I've
never had to deal with. My expertise develops as I need to, new
problems that make me learn more. This issue raised the fact that I
didn't have to use a calculation anymore for self relationships.
Something I'd not picked up since using 8.

Is the calculated field on the left side of the relationship? Is the result
stored?
That's easy to overlook and can be the cause of the relationship not
working.
