The first "<" determines the font size of the displayed merge field.
So you place your merge field, then select all the text except the
first chevron and set it to some impossibly tiny size, like 3 pt. Then
a merge field that has a name like
"reallylongtablename
::Ivegottocompletelydescribefieldattributesinthefieldnamename"; but
holds data like "SALE", is easier to manage and visualize when
building layouts, as you have seen.
