Well, for bitmap fonts PCF is about the only reasonable choice; bitmap
fonts are really a dying option, however, except for the special case
of bitmaps embedded in outline fonts for particular sizes.

For Type1 outlines, I'd say that OpenType is the best format long term.  
I don't think we handle it all that well yet, but for "interesting" scripts 
PFA/AFM really isn't an option.
