I don't quite agree. Plain Type 1 fonts (PFAs) can obey any *glyph* encoding, and are not restricted to using well-known character encodings. Character to glyph resolution happens before this, and if you control the whole rendering system, there is nothing wrong with using PFA. I would tend to agree with you in the particular case of general-purpose fonts, although I still dislike the complexity and lack of structure of OpenType -- perhaps merely a sign of my lack of understanding, though.
