does yum matter at all?
ok, i suppose yum may be involved doing the minimal install, once the system is
installed, yum should never be used.

not even for installing conary.
unless packages need to be installed to build conary from source.

but in that case, the updates repo needs to be disabled first, or yum might
pull in updates for the tools used to build conary.

so, the way understand the situation, disabling the updates repo should be the
first action done on any fresh fedora install.
