Ted and others,
I haven't seen this problem with P99SE yet (I wouldn't have expected
to yet by my experiences), but a while ago while using P98 I experienced a
very similar event. It was reported to Protel so they should know something
about it and if I recall correctly they had other reports of a similar
nature according to tech support.
It occurred when our network (and thus printers) went down one day.
I couldn't open anything in P98, not schematic nor PCB, it would just lock
during the loading process. I can't remember if it was during the file
opening or just the program loading for sure. I believe it was during the
file opening.
To solve the problem MIS loaded a dummy printer configured as though
it was connected to my LPT1 port (there is nothing on the LPT1 port). The
problem vanished. (Note: that I had not been able to open a file to
reconfigure the print outputs and it started to work again just fine.
There definitely seems to be something critical about printer
configuration with Protel. Maybe someone who understands these issues better
can gleam some insight.
