Chris,
I believe that you are a little confused, the unconnected net
"LABEL" check is strictly for finding the net labels which may not correctly
attach to the wire in your schematic. It has nothing to do with the
connection of wires.
In your ERC rule matrix you must change the "Unconnected" checks in
the matrix to either Warning or Error for most of the matrix. Then when you
have a pin which you intentionally want left open, you place the "No ERC"
marker on that pin in the schematic so that it does not generate needless
warnings or errors.
At it's default settings the ERC matrix only gives a warning for a
couple of possible open wire scenarios, I assume that your case was not one
that generated a warning.
