Hello, Protel gurus:
I have an idea for an automated test application and want to know if Protel
can be used in this way.
Protel supposedly has a means to extend it's functionality through the use
of servers. I am guessing that these servers accept commands from other
applications or servers, and can pass results back to the requester.
If I wrote an automated test application, could I have a board's nets
highlighted by Protel when given a command to do so by the test application?
Essentially, the way it would work is the board under test would be
connected to a test fixture (custom made; not expensive ATE), and diagnosed
by a test program. When the test program finds a fault, it would issue a
command to Protel to highlight the net and/or component that is likely at
fault.
OK, you Protel gurus, the question is:
1) Could Protel accept a command to highlight a net from an external
application?
2) If #1 is yes, through what software mechanism are commands passed to
Protel?
3) What compilers or other software tools would be needed to write the
command interface?
We are considering this approach to production test for a customer's board.
The board (35 schematic pages) has a large number (200+) of discrete I/O's
that are difficult to troubleshoot by average techs. An automated means to
point out the components to examine would be an efficient way to fix these
boards.
Thanks in advance for your help.
