Rob,
In a number of designs I have needed routed slots to mount varios bits
of hardware (heatsinks, power terminals, etc.) with and without plating.
At one stage it was suggested that I use overlapping holes. While that
worked it left a very rough looking slot.
The method I use now is...
1. Place a coordinate on one corner of the PCB (in my case 1000,1000). This
is for reference purposes.
2. I draw a track the desired width to illustrate the desired slot
3. Place coordinates at each vertex of the slot (one at each end for a
straight slot, three for a dog-leg slot, etc.)
4. I place a note on the Drill Drawing to confirm the required width of the
slot and plating details (if any)
All this lives on the Drill Drawing. I have had no complaints from PCB
fabricators and the PCBs come back with perfect slots.
Note that sometimes I need to explode the coordinates after placement to
avoid other details that live on the Drill Drawing.
My 2c worth...
