I'm confused by your confusion. :)
If, anywhere else on the web, I encountered a text box that asked me to
enter my nuclear launch codes, and I entered nothing, couldn't it be
assumed that I didn't give said app my launch codes?
We see this everywhere--registration forms that ask for optional
information, search forms which we don't enter text to because we don't
want to perform a search, etc. And nowhere are we asked "Did you really
mean to leave this optional field blank? Check this box if you really
intended to enter text there."
It just seems like, if I left that field blank, that I didn't intend to
tag the commit. Similarly, if I'm registering for someone's lolcat site
and they asked for my SSN, I started entering it but thought better of
it, that deleting what I entered would not send an SSN.
