I understand a Signal 12 is a non-existant system call. The half installworld probably caused this.

How can I recover from this?

The easiest way is probably to perform an "upgrade" from a 5.4 CD burned from the ISO image. Make sure you don't repartition or enable newfs, and it will leave your existing config files and other stuff alone.

(Note that you do want to have a backup available, first. Of course, you made a backup of your 4.x system, or at least the important bits, before trying to do this 4->5 upgrade, right...?)
