This seems quite common, in fact. <http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/vote> shows it in some other languages such as Polish, and glancing at po/ca.po shows two words "votació" and "vot", although I don't know for sure that they have the two meanings you describe. > Currently, from the po-file in most cases I can't guess what kind of > translation to use. I'm far from an expert on internationalisation, but the qualified-string ?foo: syntax doesn't feel like the right answer here. We don't have a single English string that needs to be translated two different ways; in both places where the single word "Vote" appears, it refers to the process. (Also, I'm not sure that changing the strings on S2_2 wouldn't upset already-complete translations.) This feels like a job for TRANS: comments.
