I would not be rushing to fix anything broken with Java 8 right now.
The long delayed release takes priority, for which Java 6+7 are adequate.
Post-release though, making sure FreeCol works with Java 8 will be
important.  I have not looked at how difficult it will be.  One thing
I plan to do soon after release is fix all current warnings for old code
that Java 7 does not like, and increment the minimum required Java version
to 7.  Whether to do that first, or to get Java 8 working first is unclear,
so if you feel like investigating Freecol-with-Java-8 I will be interested
to hear how it goes.  Just do not expect any consequent action until
0.11.0 is released.
