RE: Libertarian Rock

This is interesting (and right now I don’t have the time to read all of it), but I can see right away some of the points that frustrates me so about our party.   The first and foremost that is bothersome is what Libertarians do to gain notoriety. Few are seeking publicity in a ‘normal’ way. It is like ‘send in the clowns’. We need to respond positively to the citizens and the voters to gain their confidence and command their attention. Right now we are showing up on the funny pages.   Another question or statement under discussion (and probably not useful to attack in this group) is finding the libertarians that are for legislative changes through putting the LP in office. There are many people (LP and non) that believe that politicians are a bad thing, as is politics. That anyone that wins an election did so by hook and crook. The only honest politician is someone who didn’t get elected. These people are the whiners. They want to sit on the sidelines and cogitate, whine, piss, and moan, but do nothing – yet claim to be good libertarians. We can’t be governed by them. In fact I would go so far as to say, ‘let’s not waste time on them’. They don’t want to be educated about how legislative changes are made, and they don’t want to be involved in the process. Most of them see conspiracies everywhere, and the moment that the LP starts being successful they believe that we’ve ‘sold out’. Of a big concern to me is that in 2002 we had some of these non-participants run as line-holders. They didn’t want to win, yet got in the race as though they were displacing someone else from another party. What they were doing was replacing good Libertarians who can and should be running.   When we combine these two points of interest, we get Libertarians that speak (or not) in public about how they really don’t want to win, why the whole machine is a mess by inviting people that actually want to win, and at the same time ending up on the funny pages because of the way in which they propose the ideal that the best person for office is the one that does not want to be there. A few interviews with the media from these folks, and the media stops paying attention, because the LP is just not serious.   It only takes a few loose cannon candidates each election year to destroy a few years of work.   My point being here is that when we go to educate candidates that we’d better be sure that they are willing to learn and apply it. At the same time, while we are working on educating the citizen voter, we need to make sure that the message is delivered by people who actually believe in it.
