Hi all,
what has been known as the "daily 2035 cvs stable build"
kernel for over a year now has a new name and a new home:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5109

now has a file release "FreeDOS kernel 2036test". The "test"
in the name simply means that I could add some last minute
changed and make a new file release called 2036 if there
are bugs in 2036test or if there are important features missing.

Otherwise I would just rename 2036test to 2036 eventually.

Talking about renaming: I renamed com082pl3-bin to
com082pl3-bin8086 and renamed the release "082pl3" to
"082pl3 (use xmsswap for 386+ PC)" because more than
10000 people had downloaded the 8086 non-XMS-swap binary
while only 3500 had downloaded the "correct" (for everybody
who has XMS memory, XMS SWAP is a very good thing to have)
file com082pl3-xmsswap to get FreeCOM 0.82pl3...

(You cannot actually rename files, so I had to delete the
8086 non-XMS-swap file and re-upload it under another name,
which reset the download statistics, sorry...)

The FreeDOS build 2036 kernel is available in source version
(511681 byte zip) and in binary version (349773 byte zip).
The latter contains 4 different OpenWatcom builds: With and
without FAT32 support and 8086 and 386+ versions. The 386+
versions only run on 386+ computers and the FAT32 versions
are a bit bigger than those without FAT32.
Both zips also contain the (updated) documentation.

The release notes (basically telling the same as this mail)
and the CHANGELOG can be found on

http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=418615&group_id=5109

but be aware that the changelog has to be cleaned up: It
has to be split into HEAD and UNSTABLE specific changes.

As a next step, I would like to update the UNSTABLE kernel
branch. If anybody can tell me how this is accessible via
cvs, that is. Otherwise I have to download the source zip
from fdos.org and upload something based on that as a file
release without connecting the changes to the SF.net CVS
in any way...

I hope you enjoy the updated kernel. At least the new version
number will hopefully make bug reporting and knowing whether
somebody has the current kernel a lot simpler. Talking about
version ident functionality, it would be very helpful if the
FreeCOM VER command (ver.c) could do "if system is FreeDOS then
show ASCIIZ string at DX:AX returned by int 21.33ff" - a simple
patch for those who have a working compile environment for the
FreeCOM command.com shell.

If you already had the kernel from fdos.org, then you should
still download the binary file release to enjoy the changelog :-).
Functionality-wise, the SF.net 2036 kernel differs to the fdos.org
kernel only in a DBCS/Korean stub and in the removal of the
"old buggy EMM386 immunity patch" from 2036. I other words, if
you insist on using a 386-optimized kernel with an old version
of free-EMM386, you cannot use 2036 but must use fdos.org 2035-
something kernels. EMM386 got fixed some time last summer...

Summary: Check the new changelog on
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=418615&group_id=5109
and check the binaries with the shiny new name "build 2036" on
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=5109
but if you already knew the fdos.org daily builds, then 2036 will
be very much like 2035-HEAD for you.
And while you are at it, if you have been using FreeCOM com082pl3-bin
in the past then you should really change to com082pl3-xmsswap if
you have any XMS around (HIMEM loaded). If you want a newer FreeCOM,
check fdos.org, where you can also find the 2035-UNSTABLE kernel.
If you are familiar with our cvs, let me know how I can update and
build a file release for 2035-UNSTABLE (which will be named 2037pre).

That's about it :-)

Eric

PS: If you want Turbo C compiled kernels published, please help
compiling them. Somehow my Turbo C does not like the current
source snapshot...?
