So you're saying "I tried stuff and it didn't work". Nope. When I do it, it works. any why are you trying to make your Perl module perform digest authentication? Do you not realize that the server *already* supports digest? All you have to do is set a Cleartext-Password for the user, and the server Just Does the Right Thing.
