Nic,

While tksurfer tries to create a .xdebug_tksurfer file when it starts,
failing to do so, due to inability to write to the current working
directory, should not cause tksurfer to fail. That is to say, tksurfer
should should start and be able to display in a 'read-only' environment.

So I would say there is some other failure occurring that is preventing
tksurfer from starting from your USB drive. But did you say that it
fails to start from the local hard-drive as well? Does it create
a .xdebug_tksurfer file? That should give some details on the failure.
Has tksurfer ever worked for you? Some tksurfer installs have GLX
driver problems (updating the NVIDIA driver solves those problems, when
an NVIDIA graphics card is in the system).
