Jenifer,

We've seen this on RHEL5 platforms (although there has been no relation
to fsl). A work-around is to add this to the end of
your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:

Section "Extensions"
   Option "Composite" "false"
EndSection

and restart X (Ctrl-Backspace).

You might need to substitute 'Disable' for 'false' in the above (some
drivers use one or the other).

I'm not sure why upgrading to fsl412 would cause this to start happening
now though, probably unrelated. Do you have freesurfer setup to setup
FSL? if so, you could try 'unsetenv FSL_DIR' prior to sourcing
freesurfer setup to bypass fsl setup, to see if this really is related
to fsl (which i doubt).
