Amy, No, you do not need to create a label for 'other'. Just be sure to list just your label when creating the annot, like:
mris_label2annot --s subj \ --h lh \ --l lh.vmpfc.label \ --ctab your_color_table \ --a your_aparc If you add more labels, then you can just add more '--l somelabel' args to the command.
